The Kandy to Ella train is the most loved rail route in the country, climbing from around 500 metres in the Kandy valley to more than 1,800 metres at Pattipola before dropping into the hills above Ella. Since Cyclone Ditwah damaged the upcountry line in late November 2025, the stretch north of Nanu Oya has been closed for repairs, so travellers cover the Kandy leg by road and board the train at Nanu Oya. Allow four to five days for the route, add a couple of hikes, and the journey stops being a transfer and becomes the best part of the holiday.
Why this route deserves more than one day
Most visitors do Kandy to Ella as a single long travel day. They arrive tired, photograph the Nine Arch Bridge the next morning, and leave. That is a shame, because almost everything worth seeing here sits in the gaps between the famous stops: a tea factory that still runs on 1930s rollers, a village boutique selling hoppers at dusk, a ridge walk with nobody else on it.
Travelling slowly also solves a practical problem. The hills sit under cloud for much of the morning and clear in the afternoon, or the reverse, with very little warning. Two nights in a place gives the weather a second chance. This is the thinking behind slow travel in Sri Lanka, and the hill country is where it pays off most.
What is the current status of the hill country railway?
At the time of writing in September 2026, the line runs between Nanu Oya and Badulla, passing through Ella. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section remains closed for reconstruction. Passenger services on the Nanu Oya to Badulla stretch resumed on 20 June 2026 after seven months of suspension, and railway officials have said they expect the full Colombo to Badulla line to be operating again before the end of the year.

Timetables have changed several times this year, so check the Sri Lanka Railways notices or ask your tour operator a few days before you travel.
The good news is that the open section is the spectacular one. The climb past Ambewela, Pattipola, Ohiya and Haputale is what earns the route its reputation as the best train journey in Sri Lanka, and none of that has been lost.
What the ride is actually like
Expect an old carriage, ceiling fans, open windows and vendors moving through with vadai and sweet tea. This is not a luxury service and it is not trying to be. The seats are worn, the doors stay open, and the whole thing rattles along at walking pace through tea gardens.

Second class reserved is the sweet spot. Book as early as you can, because reservations open 30 days before departure and the good trains fill quickly in December, January and July. Sit on the left travelling south for the valley views.
What is hiking in Ella really like?
Hiking in Ella is gentle by mountain standards and rarely takes a full day. Most walks are two to three hours return on clear paths, with tea estates on one side and a drop into the valley on the other. You do not need a guide for the main trails, though you do need shoes with grip, because the red soil turns slippery after rain.
Little Adam’s Peak
The easy one. About 45 minutes up from the Ella to Passara road, on a path that runs through working tea fields. Go at first light and you will often have the summit ridge to yourself.
Ella Rock
Harder, around three hours return, and easy to get lost on. The route follows the railway line for a stretch before turning uphill through eucalyptus. Take water and start before 7am.
The Nine Arch Bridge
Not a hike so much as a twenty-minute walk down from Ella town through the jungle. The bridge is a 1920s stone viaduct built without steel, and it photographs best from the eastern viewpoint when a train crosses. Ask at the station for the day’s times, since they shift with the current timetable.
Lipton’s Seat
An hour west near Haputale, reached through the Dambatenne estate. The walk up is around 7km on an estate road, and the view at sunrise stretches to the southern plains. Quieter than anything in Ella.
Things to do in Ella when you are not walking
Ella is small, and that is the appeal. Beyond the trails, the best of the local activities are quiet ones: a tea factory tour at Halpewatte or Dambatenne, a cooking class with a family in Kithalella, an afternoon at Ravana Falls when the crowds thin after four, or a tuk-tuk run out to Diyaluma Falls for a swim in the upper pools. Practical notes for Sri Lanka train travel
- Book reserved seats 30 days ahead through Sri Lanka Railways or a licensed agent. Avoid resellers charging LKR 5,000 and up for a LKR 600 seat.
- Keep luggage small. Overhead racks are shallow and the carriages get tight.
- Arrive at Nanu Oya 30 to 45 minutes early to find your carriage.
- Bring a light jacket. Pattipola sits above 1,800 metres and the mornings are genuinely cold.
- Do not hang out of the doors while the train is moving. People are injured every year doing this for photographs.
